The Rise of In-House Executive Search in Higher Ed

Bridget Hough, DMA James Kao Adam Seid Bridget Hough, DMA, James Kao, Adam Seid

Colleges and universities are building in-house executive search teams as an alternative to outside search firms, whose fees typically run about a third of a placed candidate’s first-year salary. The authors, all HEERN officers, describe what an internal team delivers: substantial savings (one case saved an estimated $750,000 a year), candidate quality on par with external searches, and the strategic advantages of institutional alignment and a long-term commitment to the hire. They are candid about the limits of an early-stage internal team and recommend a hybrid approach, deciding search by search which to run in-house and which to place with an outside partner.
